WHY I THINK BI-RACIAL PEOPLE ARE CONFUSED

Mixing Races Equals Confusion

Stay calm and keep reading!! And definitely try not to get offended!!

Side note: the Greek word translated "offense" is scandalizo. It comes from a word that means, "a trap."

So please don't let me bait you into a trap of offense by wording my blog the way that I did haha.

For my readers that don't know me personally but may have only seen my picture on this website, you may have assumed I am of the caucasian race.

I am, in fact, a woman of color (lacking melanin lol.)

I used to say that I'm a fly on every white man's wall listening in on their sometimes offensive conversations of racism.

I do have features that make one start to guess what race I actually am but for the most part you would never guess that my highest percentage of DNA comes from my African American father.

The world we live in today is much different from when I was a child and probably ten times different from when my parents were children.

So having this conversation may not make much sense to the "Millennials" but for the Gen X and Baby Boomers you should fully understand some of my points of view.

I have talked a little bit about where I grew up but not so much about the peers I grew up with. By the time I was in elementary school, there were several other bi-racial (mixed) students and maybe a handful of white kids.

My siblings (that had both Caucasian parents) were the only white children in their school. You can imagine the struggles they faced because being different from the majority in any aspect is challenging.

I never felt different from my friends. I was comfortable with how I looked and I didn't think about our differences.

That is until I started paying attention to the comments. And when we merged schools with the other side of town, the comments got louder.

"She thinks she's black!"

"Oh so Aimee is a white girl now huh?"

These are just a couple of comments to give you a little insight.

I would talk one way with a certain family members and friends then the complete opposite with others. I spent half of my life being confused and not fitting in.

I distinctly remember a trip that I made with a friend to Atlanta, Georgia. We were at the mall and met a group of friends. We all started walking together and one the boys continuously said to each passer by "oh she's not white, I promise!"

He was embarrassed to be seen with someone of a different race. And I just wanted to run back home as fast as I could.

What I noticed growing up is that my mixed friends that were a darker skin tone than me, were able to say and do things without this same criticism.

I soon realized that "colorism" was a huge issue within the black community. An issue that left me confused and desolate.

Another traumatic incident is when I was at dinner at a potential boyfriend's house. Some how the conversation came to my grandfather being the first African American superintendent in our state.

The look the mother gave her son said everything I needed to know. Needless to say, I didn't get a follow-up date haha.

If I were to interview each of my readers, I am confident that I would hear similar stories of colorism, racism and discrimination.

Rejected by your peers, co-workers, family, and even your community can leave wounds that may never heal.

And the way our society is set up, the probability of fresh wounds occurring is more likely than not.

I only now wish that I would have had someone explain to me the importance of being an original, authentic, tailor-made individual.

Being peculiar, unique, the minority are all attributes!!!! Embracing these individual characteristics is what will set you apart.

No matter what your DNA is mixed with I can tell you for certain it doesn't equal confusion but rather brilliance!!

Forming and shaping your identity according to what our Creator says about us is crucial to living a life of victory, freedom and happiness.
