Inhale through your nose and hold it for as long as you can. When you think that you can't hold it any longer, take an additional breath in. Exhale through your mouth.

How does your body feel after doing this exercise? I feel rejuvenated. I feel relaxed. I feel focused.

Resetting every cell in your body through deep breathing is essential for cell growth. Sadly, over 70% of Americans forego this and shallow breathe their entire lives.

Statistically, the physical benefits of deep breathing are relaxed muscles, reduced blood pressure, improved circulation, reduction in stress and anxiety, as well as mild weight loss.

I found this out when I was a teenager after I just buried my first born son. Me and my friends were at the mall and I was at the register of my favorite store when all of the sudden I started sweating profusely but my hands were ice cold. I ran out of the store and I knew I was having yet another panic attack. The first time I had a panic attack, I had to go the ER because my body was demonstrating symptoms of having a stroke. So when this started happening, in public, at the mall, in front of my friends, I knew I had to calm myself down and the only way in doing so was taking deep breaths in and holding it until I couldn't any longer and then exhaling, repeating this until every physical manifestation of a panic attack was gone.

I walked away from that incident with insurmountable knowledge. Over the years, furthering my studies in the benefits of deep breathing, I learned that I can deep breath when somebody is waxing my nerves to help me stay calm, I can deep breath when I am exhausting an extreme amount of energy at the gym and I need one more set, I can deep breath in just about every instance of my life and I will feel rejuvenated, relaxed and focused.

This is a simple technique that anyone can do. Even the asthmatic - I know this because my son currently has symptoms of asthma when he comes under any virus and applying the same technique for him works equally the same. Remember, I said "hold it as long as you can" which varies from individuals.

We all know that we need an adequate amount of sleep in order to function at our highest capabilities. What seems to be lacking is the word "proper" sleep. Going to bed angry, going to bed stressed, going to bed after watching horror movies, statistically and biblical proves that will result to our subconscious mind being programmed accordingly. So when you wake the next morning, you have already started your day in a deficit.

I talk about effective sleeping habits in my previous blog and this is not a "one and done" strategy. We have to consciously rid ourselves of negative, hurtful, stressful, frightening thoughts prior to drifting asleep. This will ensure that we wake refreshed and rejuvenated.

I recently heard an alarming study. This study looked at the lives of several women that have been diagnosed with breast cancer and the common underlying theme between them was they all had gone through a tumultuous divorce. I'm sure you have heard that holding onto resentment, bitterness, anger etc. is like drinking poison but expecting the person who wronged us to get sick.

Understanding that when we take the higher road we not only feel better about life but life rewards us with better. The spouse that cheats and leaves you for another is beyond hurtful but knowing that greater is right around the corner if we maintain integrity and stay on the path less traveled.

You can be at EASE or disEASE. Remember, we are in control of our thoughts, emotions and reactions. We have the ability to choose a more peaceful and balanced state of mind. By prioritizing yourself and implementing healthy coping mechanisms, we can prevent diseases.

Deep breathing to calm our bodies and our minds, proper sleep, being in control of our thoughts, and walking in forgiveness are simply yet seldom practiced techniques that will boost our immune systems naturally.
