Does Positive Thinking Even Work?

After several years of being of a sabbatical, I started watching the news and social media posts again.

I'm still unsure whether or not this is a good thing for me or if it will become detriment. Ask me in a couple of weeks.

The reasons for my decision are clear. Prior to my abstinence, the news would upset me to the point of affecting my sleep. Social media would incite insecurities that would have me questioning every aspect of my being.

In order for my transformation, this was a crucial and necessary step. I stayed clueless about things happening all over the world and if I'm being honest, it felt peaceful. However, we both know that you cannot live with your head buried in the sand forever.

Since my return, I have been appalled. This is really the only word that can adequately describe how I feel.

So far, I am doing a good job at not letting my shock, outrage and dismay bother me like it did in years past.

One thing, however, that I am seeing on several different posts is this. These view points are on the complete opposite end of the spectrum. They are conflicting, contrasting, incompatible, and completely contrary to one another.

Before I divulge the specifics, let me first be clear on why this is shocking news to me. I really honestly didn't think this would be such a debatable topic. I just assumed it was understood by most, even though many don't implement it.

Does positive thinking even work? The "left" say it is utterly ridiculous and absurd. The "right" say change your thinking and your results will change.

For me personally, I transformed my entire life by changing my thoughts. Almost every single aspect has been radically effected.

Thus inspiring this blog, "The Miracle of Your Mind."

But for the sake of this argument indulge me with this story.

A mother has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and only will live for 3 months. She tells this to her two daughters. You can only imagine the pain they feel.

One daughter (let's refer to her as the "left") decides to go into a deep dark, angry depression and refuses to talk to anyone including her dying mother. Her anger, bitterness, sadness and grief has completely debilitated her and affected everything in her life.

The other daughter (the "right") has taken the opposite stance. Every day she wakes with happy, positive thoughts and she works tirelessly at maintaining this state of being each day despite the difficulties they face. She and her mother spend the days singing, laughing, enjoying nature and the beautiful things all around them.

As predicted by the doctors, sadly the mother dies. It is clear which daughter reaped the benefits of positive thinking despite encountering the undesirable outcome.

The moral of the story is sometimes positive thinking doesn't change the end result but it certainly allows you to have the advantage in the situation.

Does thinking positive even work? It is not black magic. We are not practicing this through incantations, séances or voodooism.

As believers we are instructed to do this.

"Finally brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." - Philippians 4:8

Thinking positively is a mindset that will enhance our daily lives. It allows us to focus on the beauty of life and thoroughly enjoy every day.
