Desperation In Disguise

I heard something the other day that has given me food for thought.

We live in a world that is results driven, performance based, and the one with the most toys is considered successful.

Although some may disagree this statement, which by the way in my opinion is a flawed premise, the facts are as such.

If you don't believe me, stop using the scale to measure your fitness journey. (inserts smirking emoji lol)

I heard a teaching that basically said goal setting is placing attention on the thing that you don't yet have, thus giving more focus on the absence of it rather than the satisfaction of attaining that which you seek.

At first, this was a hard pill for me to swallow and I was unsure if I agreed with the teaching.

After having a conversation with a trusted confidant I was able to understand more clear and it lead me to study the Law of Inverse Transformation.

Before I delve into this law, I want to first talk about goal setting.

Goal setting is beneficial to keep your eye on the prize. Goal setting gives clarity, focus, motivation, measurement, accountability and so much more.

But there are two ends of the stick - wanted and unwanted.

When your focus is more on the lack of that which you desire this is when the teaching is accurate.

If your goal is to lose 10 pounds by a certain date or build 10 pounds of muscle before you go on vacation and every day you stress and make yourself sick over the scale, therein lies the fallacy of goal setting.

The Law of Inverse Transformation in simple terms is: when you stop forcing a change, the change often happens naturally.

I talked about stress and strain when believing God for something.

When you go to God in prayer, we are not beggars but rather we should go with full confidence that not only does He hear us but He gives us that which we petition Him for.

However, we rarely if ever use the same approach when it comes to goal setting.

We set the goal and every glance at it we measure our success. We have little to no faith in its fulfillment until we are close enough to touch it.

What I have learned the hard way is when you push harder against something, it tends to resist or intensify.

Relax and understand that ease and transformation is not achieved by tightening your grip but by loosening it.

I realize that sounded poetic and if I'm being honest it is truly easier said than done.

The scientific principle behind this law is our emotions, habits, relationships and even creativity often behave inversely to pressure.

Our minds interpret force as a threat and threat activates resistance and resistance blocks transformation.

Letting go removes the threat - so the system self-corrects.

If you are able to set the goal and feel good about the steps taken to move closer to it, then goal setting is beneficial.

If you set the goal and stress about the outcome, the progress or lack thereof, then you are only pushing the accomplishment further out.

In conclusion, we are sometimes knowingly, but most of the time unknowingly at the mercy of the laws of the universe and it is our obligation to use them for our benefit.
