Staying Calm

I was sorting through the mail and I received a notice that I missed a "signature required certified" letter and the sender was listed as "STATE."

My heart skipped a beat, my armpits started building moisture and my mind instantaneously was filled with worry. Thoughts were racing, "what if this is an audit, my homeowners insurance could be canceled, is the governor trying to deport me, and so on." Absolutely ridiculously, absurd, impossible situations, yet my mind had them all in thought.

All of this was from a letter that I hadn't even opened, didn't even have in my possession and furthermore was clueless as to what it was.

Fear, trepidation, panic, are all blood-relatives. They are not necessarily triplets but if I had to guess, I would say they are siblings for sure. I can go on to say I bet their middle name is "Causes" and last name is "Disease or Aging."

Their symptoms are physical. Stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline are released. Your blood pressure and heart rate increase. You start breathing faster. Even your blood flow changes. Blood actually flows from your heart and into your limbs making it easier for you to run.

There are justifiable reasons to fear and/or panic. However, living in a constant state will assuredly bring sickness and ultimately an early death to the human body.

Could I have prevented myself from panic while looking through the mail? Or perhaps stop fear from over-taking me if I were to feel an unknown lump under myskin? Or if I can't get a hold of my teenage daughter on the telephone for 35 seconds?

Are there ways that we can get out ahead of panic, fear or trepidation? Is there an
"art" to not panic?

If you have read my previous blogs, you can agree that once we feel these emotions of stress, worry, etc., we have effective ways to calm down. But my question is, prior to feeling panic, is there a way to get out ahead of it.

This art, otherwise known as technique, is one that we never quite master. It can be perfected, an on-going perfection, that is.

If you are a believer, then it is required of you to know that your life is in the hands of God. Praying the Father's will be done each day in your life, then being confident that your steps are ordered and EXPECTING good things to happen to you.

If I were in a state of perfecting this art that I have outlined, upon receiving the notification of the letter I needed to pick up, my first thought should have been "oh shoot, the 'state' must owe me some money or something."

Clearly I was on the opposite end of the spectrum. Thus, inspired this blog and simultaneously reminded me that I too need just as much focus on these areas that I write about.

One of my daily affirmations and declarations is as follows: I EXPECT ONLY THE BEST AND INEVITABLY ONLY THE BEST COMES TO ME. (period)

Another, is asking the Lord to perfect my knowledge of His love for me. "There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear." - 1 John 4:18

In closing, upon picking up the certified letter, it was in fact, great news. Preventing unnecessary panic will leave the reserves full in our tanks for when there is a real threat of danger and we need to utilize the chemicals produced to handle the situation.
