Strategizing Tips

Very few people know that one of my biggest hobbies is jigsaw puzzles. They are one of the highlights I look forward to in the evenings when I have free time.

I am very selective when choosing them and I have a full strategy from start to finish. Although this varies depending on the level of difficulty.

But one thing is for certain, I begin each puzzle in the same manner and I organize my pieces accordingly.

My youngest daughter has always had an interest in helping me and she is a beast with it. I told her that she could challenge any person in her age range and win hands down each time.

In fact, when she was only 4 years old I had her in a competition with a child three times her age and she won leaving him with over 10 pieces left in a 25 piece puzzle.

I remember one time my son, who is 2 years older than my daughter, tried to challenge her and I said "son, this is not the smoke you want - trust me."

The main reason I think she was so quick and why my son was not is because my daughter had a premeditated strategy before she began. Whereas my son just threw the pieces on the table in hopes he could be victorious.

However, "tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat - Sun Tzu."

I fully understand that problem solving is not everyone's strong suit. But I do believe that everyone has the ability to learn better ways to find the solution to a situation or task.

Too many times we go into things haphazardly hoping for the desired outcome and this is the true meaning of the quote. We will be defeated before the battle begins.

We recognize and understand the value in effectively strategizing when starting a project but we fail to see how this applies to our relationships with others.

We are emotional beings and it's understandable to get in our feelings. Instead of us making irrational decisions in this moment, we need to take a deep breath in and hold it until we can no longer.

By doing this, it will not only force our muscles to relax, but it will improve our focus. Once you are back in the position of rationale, you can then effectively strategize your next move.

Last night I found myself in a situation where I exercised little to no self control in my conversation. The entire time I could hear this soft, quiet voice saying shhhhhhh and in retrospect I wish I had obeyed.

I have mastered certain areas of my life and I my intentions are to do so in this aspect as well. If I were a student in this class, my guess is that I would be somewhere in grade school. Perhaps even kindergarten lol.

The good news is that I will have ample opportunities to pass the test again. Life is good at giving us "second chances."

In preparation for this, find an area in your life where you are successful at implementing strategies and duplicate those steps you take in other facets of your life.

You might not be the fastest at completing your puzzle, but you certainly will be triumphant in doing so.
