SLOW COOKERS VERSES INSTAPOTS
Developing Patience
4/30/20242 min read
I say this with all humility, but I am a beast with it in the kitchen. I attribute this to watching my mom cook almost every meal.
And when I got older, I didn't just ask her for recipes. I would watch her make it then take mental and physical notes.
Furthermore, I am constantly learning and educating myself when it comes to cooking techniques and styles.
When the "insta-pot" gained notoriety I must have been in the dark ages because I hadn't heard of this machine until years later when my sister told me about it.
She told me how she could make a pot roast in a little under an hour. I was shocked and appalled that people actually thought they could have the same meal that took me a minimum of 6-8 hours to make, in under one.
Of course I ventured out to purchase one and I had my first pot roast in an insta-pot. The results were astonishing but somewhat predictable.
The tenderness of the meat was incredible. It was soft as butter. However, the flavor depth was not quite there like it is when the meat has hours and hours of marinating.
The other day me and the kids were out for dinner. My 7 year old daughter tells the waitress what she wants. Not even 5 minutes later she says "where is my food?"
This is a regular occurrence when we eat out. Who am I kidding - it's literally every single time we are at a restaurant lol.
Each time I reply with "woman you just ordered can you be patient please?!"
I remembered my 9 year old used to do the same thing. Then I realized that patience comes with maturity.
Children expect instant gratification, immediate results, and their pleasure principles are instinctually high - thus making them unable to cope with discomfort such as hunger or thirst.
As we mature, we are able to understand that prolonging these urges will strengthen our ability to discipline ourselves.
It's probably obvious by now that I am not writing this blog to persuade you on which cooking technique is best, but I am bringing awareness to our mindsets.
I really feel like majority of the time I have a lot of faith in God. I truly believe He is Almighty. He is able to rain down prime rib, prepared just how we like it, seasoned to perfection if He wanted. That is my "insta-pot faith."
Getting instant results the minute I pray. "Before the words leave my mouth..." He answers.
But do I have "slow cooker faith?" The times that I have to wait hours upon hours which really equates to days, months and sometimes years.
That is a sign of maturity. When you can believe and STILL believe, you are no longer a baby, a child, an adolescent.
Today my prayer is "Lord I believe, but help my unbelief. Increase my faith. Help me to be patient and understand that you alone are God."
Amen.
