METACOGNITION
Highest Form of Intelligence
12/30/20254 min read
I have spent my entire adult life searching for ways to increase knowledge, far different from my teenage and adolescent years.
I try hard to broaden my vocabulary, learn new skills, and stay on top of technology.
I don't necessarily want to be the smartest person in the room, I just want to be in the presence of the smartest person in the room - making me the student of the teacher.
This is especially true in reference to staying abreast to the newest technology updates. I rely heavily on my children to teach me. Which is hilarious in its on way. The adult learning from the child haha.
I'm certainly not trying to prove my worth to anyone by increasing knowledge but what I am purposely doing is making my brain stay active.
I have learned the hard way that as you age if you don't actively work certain parts of your body, you will regret it. With your brain being high on that list.
The other day I found myself arguing with my son who at his age thinks he knows it all yet was adamantly expressing how much he hates learning.
I was trying to explain that learning, or rather the acquisition of knowledge or skill through experience, study or being taught doesn't necessarily have to happen in a "school setting."
Furthermore, there are creative ways that one can "learn."
I would consider myself a people watcher.
I enjoy watching how others interact, their conversations, their facial expressions etc. but what is most entertaining is the insight gained from observing others.
The most fascinating way for me to learn is by intently studying nature. To my surprise the Bible references this technique of learning throughout Scripture.
One that stands out most is found in Proverbs 6:6-8 which urges the lazy person to observe the wisdom of the ant: they work diligently without a ruler, storing food in the summer for the winter months; teaching hard work, foresight, and self-motivation, contrasting with laziness that leads to poverty.
That's a mouthful!!
What I have found is when I quiet myself and pay close attention, nature will be an incredible teacher of wisdom.
The advancement in the knowledge of how the human body works has skyrocketed in comparison to decades ago.
The use of medicine and treatment of disease and ailments has far surpassed the knowledge that generations before us had.
What has gone misunderstood and understudied for far too long is the way our minds work. Although the Holy Scripture gives countless explanations for us to be cognizant of.
However, there is a rising awareness that is giving us pertinent information, our obligation is to grasp ahold of it.
Research has proven that we have upwards of 60-70,000 thoughts a day. Alarmingly, 90% of these thoughts are the same thoughts as the days prior.
So that means if you habitually think about how much you hate your job or the circumstance you are stuck in, you will continuously have the same thoughts without effort.
It's almost as if our thoughts are on repeat. Like the button you can push when you want to listen to the same song over and over.
This time of year, most will think about their health and how things need to change for the better.
Unfortunately, if you constantly think about how fat you are, how tired you feel, how little discipline you have to stop smoking etc., you will echo these thoughts without saying a word.
Our subconscious magnifies the dominant of two ideas.
So if you constantly think that you are a flop, a failure, etc. but you use affirmations that contradict this, your subconscious will only accept the dominant of the two.
Whichever is louder, whichever you think about most, despite your morning affirmations, your life will mirror the dominant.
So in order to combat this, and truly make this year different from all the others, you need to operate in the highest form of intelligence.
METACOGNITION.
A big word for such a simple meaning.
Ready? Here it is.
Think about what you think about.
Period.
Make a conscious decision to think on purpose.
Think with purpose. Think on purpose.
Be strategic in your thinking.
Be vigilant with your conversations so that your thoughts align with metacognition.
If you are in constant communication with gossiping friends, or nagging and complaining family members, your thoughts can become contaminated.
If you have a clean glass of water (your pure thoughts) and you sit down with somebody who is angry, bitter, full of hate, imagine your glass of clean water being infiltrated with dirt.
When you leave their presence, if you do not put forth effort to keep your glass of water clean, you are at risk. Every time. No exception.
If we are God's highest form of creation, which we are, then we should operate with the highest form of intelligence as well.
When you master this skill, you can master any and every thing.
