How to Develop Organizational Skills

During a job interview years ago I was asked to describe myself in one word. Without hesitation I said "organized."

One of my super powers is to be able to walk into a chaotic room and organize it mentally before I would even start to rearrange things.

Not everyone has the capabilities to organize or keep things in orderly fashion so I have to stop and carefully use compassion towards those who do not have the same ability.

I got a phone call from a friend the other day who needed advice. She told me that her live in boyfriend does not help with household chores despite the fact that they both work outside of the home equal hours.

I proceeded to tell her that she was asking advice from the wrong friend because I am so traditional in male and female roles haha.

But I went on to tell her how I run my house to keep things continuously organized. I explained that I set rules in place that everyone in my house complies with including guests when they visit.

For example, I do not let anyone leave shoes out. When you walk in you have to take your shoes off and carry them to the guest bedroom.

Another example, all used dishes have to either be placed in the dishwasher (completely out of sight) or they must be washed, dried and put away if the dishwasher in running. This way there will never be dirty dishes piled up or dishes setting out all over the kitchen.

Everyone, including my 9 year old son and my 7 year old daughter comply. They have for years and I am now effectively teaching them how to properly wash dishes.

I have laundry on a schedule and I follow the "do it now" rule of thumb, making myself fold and put them away immediately after they finish drying. Otherwise, they will be piled up higher than a mountain.

The main reason I am strict with myself regarding household chores is because I literally have nightmares if certain rooms are disorganized and chaotic.

Our garage had hundreds of boxes of inventory stored and every holiday containers throughout. You could barely walk in there, nevertheless park a car.

It haunted me for months. It got so bad that it affected my sleep. Thankfully a snake came in and shed its skin so my husband agreed it was time for a storage unit.

I am sharing these intimate details of my life with you because I wasn't always like this. When I was a teenager my bedroom was so messy it could have been featured on an episode of "Hoarders."

Even then in my young, immature mind, I was deeply disturbed by the chaos. I would clean often but it would inevitably end up a mess shortly after.

That is when I developed the skill set to be organized and stay organized. When I have order in my drawers, closets, garage etc. I am the happiest.

Making rules and sticking to them lessens my daily duties. Having others oblige, even guests, keeps things orderly.

"Do it now" requires strict discipline. Making yourself follow through immediately is what will set you apart from the majority.

I apply this principle to a lot of areas in my life to keep me disciplined, organized, and happy. This is an attitude of mind that can be enhanced daily.

Find small things that you can develop mental fortitude with. I can assure you that as you strengthen these areas in your life, you will find it easier and easier to complete bigger tasks.

If not having an organized space doesn't bother you, think of what does. Then make a list of how you can change it. Implement these changes and have others respect your boundaries.

It’s been an eventful couple of weeks with a tornado the touched down and the eclipse.
