When Life Throws a Sucker Punch

When Life Throws a Blow
When Life Throws a Blow

I was going through my morning routine, as usual I was joyful, singing and feeling quite victorious.

All of my tasks and goals have been seemingly effortlessly falling into place. I thoroughly enjoy the winter months and we just had an amazing snow fall. We had a great visit with family so I was "gucch" (which is my slang, short for Gucci, meaning superb lol)

I jumped in the shower and was still euphoric, that is until, I opened my body wash and it spit out what I believe to be hot lava into my eye.

It has been a very long time since I have heard such profanity depart my lips but it flowed like poetry. I'm assuming since I am a former curse-word addict, that it's like a riding a bike. I hopped on that metaphoric bicycle and road a marathon.

After I flushed my eye and gained some vision back, I stood in the running water shocked. I was in utter disbelief that one, I was literally sucker punched by this unsuspecting perpetrator pretending to be something else when in fact it was deliberate in its attack against me.

Secondary to that, I was in shock that I was in the presence of such a foul mouthed individual, that happened to be me.

Well that incident sparked this topic of conversation.

How in the world do we handle circumstances in life that come out of nowhere?

Is it possible for us to maintain a sense of dignity when we are under an attack that we were not at all prepared for?

Should we do more to prepare ourselves for the subpar aspects of life?

I have said a million times that we are God's highest forms of creation. We are designed to reign in life. We have dominion over all of His creation. But how do we walk in this authority? The answer lies within the "rule book."

There are rules and laws that govern us and it is our responsibility to understand and comply with such.

However, there is so much conflicting information that we are constantly being fed. One motivational speaker will say to focus only on the good, positive, expecting only the best and the other will say to prepare yourself for the worst and when it happens you will be armed.

It is my personal opinion to go with the first rather than the last only because I was in such a fearful, pessimist state of being for so long that if I "prepare myself for the worst" I will spiral down so far out of control that anxiety will most assuredly creep in before I would know it.

However, reflecting on the situation in the shower, which by the way is minuscule in comparison of what life can throw at us, I want to find a good balance between the two.

Jesus said "in me, you will have peace; in the world you will have troubles and trials but be of good cheer; I have overcome them all." - John 16:33

"When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will raise a barrier to protect you." - Isaiah 59:19

If we were to get instructions for this topic based off of only two Scriptures, I believe that we are to remain in constant, consistent, flow of peace and tranquility. At the same time, knowing that we will face situations but we have a promise from God that everything will work out in our behalf.

A "sucker punch" is when someone hits you when you are not expecting it. God Himself has given us a foreknowledge of such things so we are not blindsided when it happens.

When we believe in God, we have a supernatural peace, one that surpasses our understanding. This is our birth-right.

Can we still sing despite hot lava "aka" soap burning our eyes? It absolutely is possible. I am hoping that next time I will handle it will grace.
